Dr. T. Colin Campbell Draws Huge Crowds at the Science of Science of Spirituality International Meditation Center
Crowds of people packed the huge hall and spilled over to fill the 500-seat dining room of the Science of Spirituality International Meditation Center in Lisle, IL on Saturday, June 29, when Dr. T. Colin Campbell, scientist and nutrition pioneer spoke.
His talk, “Health: Nutrition First, Pills Second” was part of the Veggie Fest Presents series of free monthly talks, food demos, and classes held at the center.
The audience streamed into the meditation center, many coming two hours early, to hear the eighty-five-year-old plant-based diet advocate who, for many, has gained rock star status. His message on the profound benefits of a plant-based diet has changed the life of thousands. He is best known for his work, one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted, summarized in his book The China Study.
After receiving a welcome standing ovation, Dr. Campbell opened by saying, “The mere sight of this place (the meditation center) puts something in a person. I find this place to be a remarkable facility, and I know the cause to which the organization aspires is the same as my own, so it’s a real honor to be able to speak to you.”
Looking at the science
This August, Campbell said, will mark 63 years since he started his research on the connection between food and health. Although he started out as an adherent to the traditional belief that animal protein promoted health, he said he has since learned, through detailed medical and scientific study, just the opposite. He spoke passionately about the overwhelming evidence revealing how animal protein (both dairy and meat) “turns on cancer cells” and how a “whole-food plant-based diet” can “turn off those cancer cells.”
Why this evidence isn’t being embraced by the traditional medical community is a question he’s dealing with in his upcoming book. He added that medical and scientific studies require funding, and much of the funding available is given out by the dairy and the pharmaceutical industry.
He also spoke about how the focus is on finding a pill, a serum, or a quick-fix to curing cancer, although evidence points to a more wholistic approach. The body, he said, is a complex system of chemical actions and reactions. To function optimally, the body does not rely on one mechanism or one vitamin to maintain its health. It’s in the rich combination of healthy, plant-based foods from which the body can extract the nutrients and micronutrients it needs to sustain itself.
